01 How to

How to use the high school GPA calculator

  1. Add your classes

Name each class, then pick its level (Regular, Honors or AP/IB) and its credits: 1 for a full-year class, 0.5 for one semester.

  2. Enter grades as letters or percentages

Switch to Percent if your report card shows numbers: each one turns into its letter by the scale below.

  3. Read both GPAs

As a weighted GPA calculator, it adds the bonus of honors, AP and IB classes; the unweighted GPA counts an A as 4.0 in any class.

  4. Start over

Clear all empties the rows. Nothing is saved: a reload brings the example back.

02 Scale

The weighted vs. unweighted GPA scale

Most high schools add 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual-enrollment classes, so a weighted GPA can reach 5.0. An F gets no bonus.

Schools differ: some give other bonuses, cap them or weight only some classes, so check your school’s handbook for an official GPA. In college there is no honors bonus: use the GPA calculator.

How to calculate weighted and unweighted GPA

Multiply each class’s points by its credits, add them up and divide by the total credits, once without the bonus and once with it. For the classes above:

ClassCreditsUnweightedWeighted
English 11 A− · Honors13.74.2
Algebra II B+ · Regular13.33.3
AP US History A · AP/IB14.05.0
Chemistry B+ · Honors13.33.8
Health A · Regular0.52.02.0
Total4.516.318.3

16.3 ÷ 4.5 = 3.62 unweighted, and 18.3 ÷ 4.5 = 4.07 weighted.

04 AP

Make the AP classes count

An AP class lifts your weighted GPA, and a good score on the exam in May can earn college credit. Take a full practice test with the AP practice exam timer, and track your study hours to see which class gets your time.

05 FAQ

Questions about high school GPA

What is the difference between a weighted and an unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA counts every class the same, so an A is a 4.0. A weighted GPA adds points for harder classes: an A in an AP class is a 5.0.

How do I calculate my high school GPA?

Turn each grade into points, multiply them by the class’s credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. Do it with and without the bonus to get both GPAs.

How much does an AP class raise my GPA?

On the weighted scale, a full point: an A is 5.0 instead of 4.0, a B is 4.0. The unweighted GPA does not change.

Do colleges look at my weighted or my unweighted GPA?

Many colleges recalculate GPAs their own way, often unweighted and from core classes, and read your transcript for how hard your classes were.

What if my school doesn’t use credits?

Give every class 1 credit: then every class counts the same. If your school counts a one-semester class as half a class, enter 0.5 for it instead.
