How to use the GPA calculator

  1. Add your courses

Type a course name if you like, pick the letter grade and enter the credits, or credit hours. Add a row for every course.

  2. Read your GPA

It updates as you type, with the total credits and quality points under it.

Pass/fail, withdrawn and audited courses carry no grade points: remove them or give them 0 credits.

  4. Start over

Clear all empties every row for the next term. Nothing is saved: a reload brings the example back.

02 Scale

The 4.0 GPA scale

Most US colleges and high schools turn letter grades into points like this. The percentages are the usual cutoffs; a syllabus may set its own.

Letter gradePercentageGPA points
A+97–100%4.0
A93–96%4.0
A−90–92%3.7
B+87–89%3.3
B83–86%3.0
B−80–82%2.7
C+77–79%2.3
C73–76%2.0
C−70–72%1.7
D+67–69%1.3
D63–66%1.0
D−60–62%0.7
Fbelow 60%0.0

Scales vary: some schools count an A+ as 4.3 or skip plus and minus grades, and many add points for honors and AP classes, as a weighted GPA calculator does. This calculator uses the unweighted scale above: check your school’s for an official GPA.

03 By hand

How to calculate your GPA

GPA is an average weighted by credits: a 4-credit course counts more than a 3-credit one. Turn each grade into points, multiply them by the course’s credits to get its quality points, then divide total quality points by total credits. For the courses above:

CourseGradeCreditsQuality points
BiologyA− (3.7)414.8
Calculus IB (3.0)412.0
English 101A (4.0)312.0
PsychologyB+ (3.3)39.9
Total1448.7

48.7 ÷ 14 = 3.48, so this term’s GPA is 3.48.

04 Study

Put your study time where it moves your GPA

A low grade in a 4-credit course pulls your GPA down more than one in a 3-credit course, so extra study time pays off there first. The study tracker shows your hours by subject, week by week: you’ll see whether that course gets its share.

05 FAQ

Questions about GPA

How do I calculate my GPA?

Turn each letter grade into points (an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0), multiply them by the course’s credits, add up these quality points and divide by your total credits. The calculator above does it as you type.

What is a good GPA?

A 3.0 is a B average, and many scholarships, honors programs and internships ask for a 3.0 or a 3.5. Selective colleges and graduate programs often look for 3.5 or higher.

Is an A+ worth 4.0 or 4.3?

Here an A+ counts as 4.0, the most common rule in the US. Some colleges give it 4.3 or 4.33; there your official GPA can come out a little higher.

Can I work out my semester GPA and my cumulative GPA?

Yes. Enter one term’s courses for your semester GPA, or every graded course for your cumulative GPA. To add a new term to it, use the cumulative GPA calculator.

What is an 89.5% on the 4.0 scale?

By the usual cutoffs 89.5% is a B+, 3.3 points. Many schools round to 90%, which makes it an A−, 3.7: your syllabus decides which, so check it before you enter the grade.
