02 How to

How to use the AP exam timer

  1. Pick your AP Exam

Choose your course from the list. Its sections, parts and the break appear under the timer with their lengths.

  2. Set up like exam day

Use a released practice exam or your teacher’s questions, and keep on your desk only what the exam allows.

  3. Press Start, or hit Space

Section I begins. When a part runs out, the next part starts right away, and after the last part of Section I the 10-minute break starts on its own. Section II waits for you to press Start.

  4. Finish early? End the section

End section saves the time you took and moves on. Pause stops the clock, which the real exam won’t do.

  5. Check your times

Every section lands in your study log with the exam and section in the note. After the last one, Copy as text lists your times for your teacher or tutor.

03 FAQ

Questions about the AP exam timer

How long is an AP Exam?

Testing time runs from 2 hours (the AP Seminar end-of-course exam) to 3 hours 15 minutes (AP Chemistry, AP English Language and the AP history exams). The 10-minute break between Section I and Section II comes on top.

Is there a break during an AP Exam?

Yes, 10 minutes between Section I and Section II. You may leave the room with the proctor’s permission, but not the building, and you can’t use your phone. The timer starts the break and waits for you to start Section II.

Are the parts of a section timed separately?

Yes. In the Bluebook app each part has its own clock, and once you move on you can’t go back. The timer does the same: when Part A ends, Part B starts at once. The scheduled break comes only between the two sections.

Can I practice just one section?

Yes. Before you press Start, choose that section in the list under the timer: the timer begins there and saves only the sections you take.

Is this an official College Board timer?

No. Study Tally is an independent study site, not affiliated with or endorsed by College Board. The section times come from College Board’s AP course pages, checked on Oct 8, 2026; look at your own exam’s page before test day.
